OPENRANGE SOFTWARE

OVERVIEW

With over 20 years of experience on all three layers of radio software, and over 1,000,000 cells shipped, Airspan’s OpenRANGE (Open RAN) software leverages field-proven experience from LTE software releases to continuously deliver innovation with specific 5G-NR packages.

OpenRANGE SOFTWARE

Airspan’s OpenRANGE vRAN software allows for modular, scalable architecture, which means deployment flexibility and cost savings.

  • Cloud-native, elastically scalable vRAN
  • Faster time-to-market with CI/CD modular micro-service architecture approach
  • Standards-based open interfaces
  • Scalable for multi-core architectures
  • CUPS architecture enables deployment flexibility and cost savings
  • Containerized solution for optimized resources (RAM and CPU provides lower latency, and faster deployment time compared to traditional VM’s)
  • Significant OpEx savings with support for energy savings, efficient maintenance, high availability, and real-time resource migration
  • High service availability with automatic VNF recovery

OpenRANGE vCU

The Air5G-CU vCU software package includes:

  • Supports separation of control and user plane (over E1AP) architecture for full flexibility in resource pooling
  • 5G-NR service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) for SA operation
  • 5G-NR radio protocols (RRC, PDCP)
  • F1AP for split 2 support
  • XnAP for inter-gNodeB communication
  • NgAP for 5G core connectivity

Key benefits:

  • Enables interworking with MEC applications through Radio Network Information Service (RNIS) API
  • Segregated user plane/control plane support (over E1AP) maximizes cost efficiency (resource pooling)
  • High-availability support

OpenRANGE vDU

The Air5G-DU vDU software package includes:

  • 5G-NR L1 base band processing
  • 5G-NR slice-aware hierarchical scheduler
  • 5G-NR radio protocols (RLC, MAC)
  • F1 (Split 2) user plane transport protocol – eGTPU
  • FH interface based on O-RAN 7.2x split O1 interface for OA&M

Key benefits:

  • SDN based L2 transport capabilities enables support for transport network slicing
  • Sliceable L2 architecture enables support for RAN network slicing
  • L1/L2 aggregation enabling inter RU carrier aggregation and multipoint transmission schemes

RADIO INTELLIGENCE CONTROLLER (RIC)

With years of extensive experience in radio resource management (RRM) and SON solutions, Airspan’s RIC portfolio reduces OpEx by simplifying operation complexity and automating the network configuration and optimization process. Fully virtualized solution components are implemented as containerized vNF’s. Compliance with O-RAN Alliance open interface definitions enable integration with 3rd party RIC and orchestration solutions:

  • O1 interface for PM export
  • E2 interface for communication between near-RT RIC and vRAN elements
  • A2 interface for communication between near-RT RIC and non-RT RIC

FEATURES

SPLIT ARCHITECTURE OPTIONS TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS

Multiple split architecture options, such as 2, 6, and 7.2, enable multi-vendor operation and future-proof CapEx.

Based on open interfaces such as O-RAN, Small Cell Forum (nFAPI), 3GPP F1, and ONAP orchestration.

Breaks the chains of traditional supply chains, revolutionizing the way networks are built today.

BENEFITS

SLICE-AWARE RAN WITH ADAPTIVE NETWORK SLICING

The innovative OpenRANGE software uses algorithms to adapt to changing network demands. Featuring dynamic configuration of RAN protocol layers on a per slice basis, it employs a slice-aware, hierarchical scheduler to maximize spectral efficiency under SLA constraints.

DYNAMIC FRONTHAUL

State-of-the-art algorithms are also used to maintain 7.2x fronthaul connectivity over non-ideal links. This enables low-level vRAN splits in a non-optimized infrastructure via dynamic L2 configurations based on proprietary KPI’s. Adapting gracefully to non-ideal and congested transport, OpenRANGE software can handle up to 5 ms latency, allowing deployment and operation over existing transport infrastructure such as microwave, DOCSIS, managed Ethernet, G.Fast, GPON, and Hybrid Fiber/Coax (HFC).
