Why do you need VoiceMAX?
Admission control enables an operator to control what type of traffic is allowed on a particular network or segment of a network. Call admission control is a known term in the VoIP world as it prevents oversubscription of VoIP traffic. Essentially, call admission control protects existing voice traffic from degrading in quality as additional traffic tries to gain access. It prevents network congestion. It is an essential ingredient for any operators to offer a quality voice service.

But, how do you provide admission control over a WiMAX or wireless IP-based network? At any given point in time, a WiMAX network will be able to support “N” calls. However “N” can vary over time, depending on various factors such as RF conditions, type of Codec used, whether silence suppression on or off and a host of other factors. Overbooking can easily take place resulting in call degradation and/or call disconnection for callers.

The solution is VoiceMAX
Airspan solves this issue by supporting admission control over it’s AS.MAX and AS.WipLL product lines. The product is called VoiceMAX, an integrated solution running on a VoiceMAX Server and our AS.MAX base stations. VoiceMAX allows management of VoIP calls within each radio sector. The integrated solution takes into account the wireless resource availability, subscriber service level agreement and call type (Emergency call, High Priority call, and Standard call). The VoiceMAX solution can allow, reject, change call parameters (Vocoders) or disconnect VoIP calls. VoiceMAX works with either iTONE Softswitch or with third party SIP based Softswitch and it works with standard SIP clients, without adding any special software. VoiceMAX is also available with Airspan BWA product, AS.WipLL.

Admission Control:
An AS.MAX sector can support up to “N” simultaneous VoIP calls. VoiceMAX makes sure that in cases of overbooking, when the “N+1” VoIP call is initiated:

  • The end user gets “Network Busy” tone
  • The “N” original VoIP calls are not dropped and their QoS is maintained
High Priority calls:
VoiceMAX makes sure that “High Priority calls” are preferred over standard calls. If needed, standard calls in the AS.MAX sector are dropped to allow high priority calls. The operator has the tools to define the high priority calls and the standard calls.

Emergency Calls:
VoiceMAX makes sure that emergency calls – such as “911” calls - are preferred over high priority calls and over standard calls. If needed, high priority calls and standard calls in the AS.MAX sector are dropped to allow the emergency calls. The operator has the tools to define how emergency calls are identified.

Four levels of services:
  • Best Effort service – for users who did not buy the service – can benefit from the services on “Best Effort” basis
  • Low Rate Voice Service – for users who are planning to work with G.729 codec (compressed voice)
  • High Rate Voice Service (64 Kbps) – for users who are planning to work with G.711 codec (non-compressed voice)
  • High Rate Voice and Video Service (64 Kbps + 64 Kbps) – for users who require both voice and video services
