Networks Establishes Operations in Indonesia, Announces Contracts with
PT Indosat and PT Lintasarta
Sunrise,
Fla. - June 13, 2001 - Airspan Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN), a leading
worldwide provider of broadband fixed wireless DSL networks, has established
an office in Indonesia to take advantage of the country's rapidly growing
telecom market. In conjunction with the opening of its office, Airspan
also announced the signing of contracts with Indonesia's leading international
telecom carrier, P.T. Indonesian Satellite Corporations Tbk (Indosat)
and P.T. Lintasarta, a leading local data communications and value-added
service provider.
In the first deal signed with P.T. Indosat, a provider of international
telecommunications services linking Indonesia to approximately 257 countries
and destinations worldwide, Airspan will provide the telecom company its
AS4000 wireless DSL system. Airspan's system will establish a wireless
network in the city of Surabaya and its suburbs. First phase of installation
will be completed in three weeks, addressing Indosat's strategy to accelerate
telecommunications development with wireless access technology
Under the Lintasarta agreement, the value-added service provider has committed
to extend its telecommunications networks with the purchase of the Airspan
AS4000 wireless DSL system. Deployment of the AS4000 systems will be extended
to 15 cities throughout Indonesia. Lintasarta plans to expand its network
to 25 cities before the end of the year.
Spearheading the operations of P.T Airspan Communication (Indonesia) is
R.K. Harsiki, an eight-year telecom veteran who joined Airspan in 1998
as its local representative. Harsiki is credited with developing the Indonesian
market for Airspan.
"It is clear that Airspan's technology will benefit the development of
telecommunications infrastructure in Indonesia," said Henrik Smith-Petersen,
Airspan President for Asia-Pacific. "With Harsiki's extensive telecom
expertise and Airspan's integrated voice and data terminals which are
based on Airspan's PacketDrive technology, Airspan will provide the most
cost-effective and efficient method to deliver wireless access.
"Our
commitment to the Indonesian market is evident with the establishment
of our office in Jakarta," Smith-Petersen added. "We are confident that
Airspan is in a robust position to capture the opportunities derived from
the evolution of the telecommunications market in Southeast Asia."
Harsiki is also confident about the future of Indonesia's telecommunications
market. "Indonesia's telecommunications sector is on the path to liberalization,
which will occur in stages over the next few years," she said. "In addition,
the government is committed to installing three million phone lines and
to developing the wireless telecommunications market. All these factors
support the positive outlook for the telecommunications industry in Indonesia."
