Airspan Signs MOU with Tropico for Manufacturing in Brazil
Brazil,
September 9, 1999 - Airspan Communications, one of the world’s leading
providers of scaleable fixed wireless telecommunications systems has today
signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tropico Sistemas e Telecomunicações
SA, one of the leading vendors of telecommunications products and services
in Brazil. With headquarters in Campinas and manufacturing facilities
in Manaus, Tropico SA develops, manufactures and supplies Tropico R and
RA Switching Systems and Accessus equipment. Tropico is owned by Promon,
one of the Brazilian's leading suppliers of integrated engineering solutions
in the telecommunications industry and CPqD Telecommunications Research
and Development Foundation. The agreement is the first stage of a process
towards Tropico becoming a manufacturer and reseller of Airspan products
integrated with Brazilian switching technology.
Based in Campinas in the state of Sao Paulo, the signing ceremony was
held at Tropico’s new offices where Airspan’s chairman, Mr Tom Huseby
and Mr Américo Richieri Filho, president of Tropico had their meeting
to sign the agreement. Also attending the meeting from Airspan was Mr
Godofredo Blaha, vice president of sales for the region. Mr Blaha commented
“This is an excellent opportunity for both parties to work towards a long
and successful partnership. Taking Airspan’s market-leading fixed wireless
technology and Tropico’s expertise in the Brazilian market will prove
to be an outstanding partnership and winning combination”.
The Brazilian market is expected to represent an estimated 10 million
wireless lines over the next five to ten years. This, together with the
burgeoning worldwide demand for fixed wireless telecommunications, has
generated rapid expansion for Airspan, and the new agreement is another
