Builds for Wireless DSL as Airspan Networks Receives Orders from Six Customers
in the 3.5 GHz Band
London,
October 19, 2000 - The momentum behind wireless DSL continues to escalate
as Airspan Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN), the leading wireless DSL equipment
provider, today announced orders from six telecommunications companies
to provide high-speed Internet access to small-to medium businesses as
well as residential customers.
Golden Cellular Communications Co., Ltd. (GCC) in China has purchased
equipment for deployment in Golden Bridge’s data networks in China. Telia
mobile affiliate MTN is extending their current mobile offering to include
fixed wireless access. PT Telkom data subsidiary PT Lintasata in Indonesia
is rolling out a high-speed data network and Vado in Austria is offering
their carrier affiliates high-speed Internet access using Airspan’s AS4000
wireless DSL platform. Additionally, existing Airspan customers TES Media
in the Czech Republic and Bell Telecomm in the Philippines are upgrading
their existing Airspan wireless networks to add the latest capabilities.
Global revenues from fixed wireless technology are expected to exceed
$16 billion in 2004, according to the Strategis Group, and by 2003, broadband
wireless networks will serve almost half of U.S. businesses and more than
a third of U.S. residences.
“We are pleased to be able to offer these customers a wide range of cost
effective wireless data solutions uniquely suited for their Internet architectures,”
said Eric Stonestrom, CEO and President. “Airspan’s platform enables service
providers to deploy high-speed Internet services faster and more economically,
which translates to faster revenue generation as well as the ability to
expand into additional markets seamlessly and affordably.”
The AS4000 wireless DSL platform is suitable for rapid construction of
the Internet architectures being rolled out by operators. The technology
can be deployed as an alternative to a traditional wired network or as
an extension to a carrier’s existing DSL rollout. Based on DS-CDMA (Direct
Sequence Code Division Multiple Access) technology, the AS4000 platform
offers a variety of services, including voice, data, packet and Internet
access. Its point-to-multi-point wireless architecture uses a central
radio site to connect customers within a cell radius of up to 25kms.
