DSL Market |
In
the Wireless Access Marketplace there are four key sectors:
The first is associated with large business pipes for downtown buildings,
supplied primarily by point-multipoint technology operating in LMDS
frequencies.
The second is wireless LANs for best-efforts corporate and public
access, supplied today by wireless LAN technology operating in unlicensed
frequencies.
The third
is residential low cost POTS and narrowband data access, supplied
by older Wireless Local Loop (WLL) technologies, operating in
licensed bands below 4GHz.
The final segment is called wireless DSL,
which supplies high speed Internet links
and high quality voice services for small to medium sized businesses
and high end residential customers, using licensed frequencies
below 4GHz. |

While there is some overlap between these segments,
they have very different properties and customer requirements. LMDS
provides high value as a fiber replacement for CLECs, but doesn't
scale to smaller customers outside a downtown core. Unlicensed technology
is fast to deploy, but is better suited for ISPs than for incumbent
or competitive carriers due to poor quality data and voice performance
in the very uncertain unlicensed bands. WLL technologies adequately
address low end residential customers, but this has proved to be a
low growth segment, without an exciting business case for the carrier.
Wireless DSL has potential to be the fastest growing segment as it
addresses the largest customer base, and solves an important problem
for carriers. ILECs are committed to wired DSL, and can use wireless
DSL to expand their market reach cost effectively. CLECs can use wireless
DSL to compliment LMDS to extend their base into the Small/Medium
Enterprises (SME) and Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) markets. |
